Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dunne Inquiry.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

619 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if persons (details supplied) in Dublin 8 will be in a position to find out from the Dunne inquiry precisely what contributed to their child's death and what happened to the organs removed. [1480/01]

As the Deputy will be aware the Government has decided to establish an inquiry to review all post mortem examination policy, practice and procedure in the State since 1970, and in particular as it relates to organ removal, retention, storage and disposal by reference to prevailing standards both in and outside of the State. The inquiry will examine the application of these policies, practices and procedures in hospitals generally and in particular their application in a number of major hospitals.

The terms of reference of the inquiry permit it to examine, inter alia, any specific cases in any hospital as it deems appropriate in relation to post-mortem examinations and post-mortem examination related matters. It is anticipated that persons wishing to make a submission relating to any matter covered by the terms of reference of the inquiry will be free to do so when the inquiry commences. I have arranged for a copy of the terms of reference to issue directly to the Deputy.
