Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Depleted Uranium Ban.

John Gormley

Question:

107 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the recent revelations regarding the use of depleted uranium in the Balkans, the Government still believes, as it agreed in a joint EU statement in 1999, that the NATO bombing campaign was necessary and warranted. [2262/01]

Derek McDowell

Question:

113 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will consider seeking an international treaty to ban the use of depleted uranium in weapons having regard to the clear evidence now existing in the Gulf and in Kosovo of the ongoing health risk for military personnel and civilians, arising from the use of such weapons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2249/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 113 together.

In relation to the question of a possible international treaty to ban the use of depleted uranium, I refer Deputies to my reply to Questions Nos. 84 and 85. From my reply to these questions, Deputies will also understand that I do not see a basis for reassessing our endorsement of the EU statement in 1999.
