Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Registration of Doctors.

Bernard Allen

Question:

676 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the delay in processing applications for temporary registration for Indian and Pakistani junior doctors recruited under the recent Government backed drive in Asia; and if discussions have taken place with the Medical Council on these delays. [1873/01]

The processing of applications for the registration of doctors in Ireland is the function of the Medical Council. The Medical Council needs to be satisfied that the criteria for registration have been met before doctors are allowed to practise in Ireland. The majority of the doctors who have come to Ireland following the recent recruitment campaign in India and Pakistan have been registered by the Medical Council and are working in hospitals around the country. The few remaining applications are in the course of being processed. The Medical Council was represented on the recruitment delegation and contact has been maintained with the council on this issue since then.
