Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Dan Neville

Question:

713 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make the necessary funding available to the Brothers of Charity Services in Limerick to enable them provide day places at the training centre in Newcastle West, County Limerick, for those on the waiting list. [2208/01]

The provision of health related support services to persons with an intellectual disability is a matter in the first instance for the relevant health board. The Regional Intellectual Disability Consultative and Development Committees in each health board region identify priorities for service development and co-ordinate the provision of services, including additional services as resources become available. These committees are representative of the health board, voluntary service providers including the Brothers of Charity and families of persons with an intellectual disability.

Based on service priorities for 2001 identified by the Regional Intellectual Disability Consultative and Development Committee, the following developments were agreed for the Brothers of Charity Services in Limerick: (a) ten residential places, (b) one respite place, (c) three day places. The Brothers of Charity will allocate the above places in line with its identified priority needs for the region.
