Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Question:

769 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the percentage of young male and female drivers responsible for fatal accidents and serious injuries on roads in each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1004/01]

Statistics relating to road accidents are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual road accident facts reports. The most recent report is in respect of 1999 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library. These reports do not identify driver responsibility in road accidents in any level of detail.

The NRA report, Young Driver Accidents 1997 to June 2000, which is also available in the Oireachtas Library, records that young drivers were considered by the Garda to be a large extent responsible in 55% of accidents, compared with 39% for older drivers – older than 24 years. Young female drivers were considered to be to a large extent responsible in 44% of accidents, compared with 57% for young male drivers.
