Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Ring

Question:

787 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the current position with regard to the Ballina stage three water supply scheme in County Mayo; when the request for an additional tower and supply to the town was submitted by the local authority; and when funding will be allocated. [1214/01]

Contract documents for Ballina water supply scheme, stage three, Ballina town, were submitted to my Department in the 1980s but were not approved. The scheme was twelfth on the list of water schemes submitted by Mayo County Council in response to the Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessment. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme, 2000-02, announced last July. Given the priority afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it was not possible to include it in the programme at that time.
