Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water Quality.

Denis Naughten

Question:

824 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will reconsider his Department's decision not to approve funding for the installation of a discoloration unit at the Kileglan Spring in south Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1679/01]

A preliminary report for the south Roscommon regional water supply scheme, which incorporates this proposal, was received in my Department in 1993 but has not been approved. The scheme is included in the list of water schemes submitted by Roscommon County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessment.

In view of the level of competing demand and the need to prioritise individual proposals on a national basis, it was not possible to include all schemes proposed by local authorities in the water services investment programme, 2000-02, announced last July. However, this was the first phase of a rolling programme that will continue up to the end of the current national development plan in 2006. Further schemes will be added to the programme on an annual basis during that period. The south Roscommon scheme will continue to be considered in that context.
