Question:

826 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars which have failed the NCT test, giving details of year of manufacture of the cars and make/models in question and the category failures. [1705/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 825 and 826 together.

Statistics on pass-fail rates generally are available on the NCTS website at www.ncts.ie. In the period 4 January 2000 to 31 December 2000, some 34,000 pre-1992 registered cars exceeded the age-related emissions standards specified as part of the National Car Test. In the same period, a total of 274,355 pre-1992 cars underwent their initial test; 148,159 or 54% of them were unsuccessful and of these, 19,261 cars failed a first re-test. A total of 28,748 initial tests were carried out on cars registered in the years 1992 to 1996. Of these 9,200 were unsuccessful and 930 of them also failed a first re-test.

Compilation of information regarding details of the make/models of cars tested, their years of manufacture and the categories of reasons for failure is not being undertaken.
