Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Enda Kenny

Question:

854 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when moneys and authorisation for provision of a sewerage scheme for Belcarra, Castlebar, County Mayo will be approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2317/01]

A brief and a preliminary report for a proposed sewerage scheme at Belcarra, County Mayo, were submitted to my Department in 1992 and January 2000, respectively, but have not been approved. The scheme is seventeenth on the list of sewerage schemes submitted by Mayo County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme 2000-02 announced last July. Given the priority rating afforded to this scheme by the Council, the level of competing demands and the funding available, it was not possible to include it in the programme at that time. However, I understand that Mayo County Council is now proposing to advance the scheme under the devolved small schemes programme.

Question:

855 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the extension of the Lough Mask regional scheme to serve the areas of Ballykeane, Manulla and Balla, County Mayo; the grant assistance available in this case; and when he expects work to commence. [2318/01]

The extension of the Lough Mask regional water supply scheme to Balla is included in my Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2000-2002 to advance through planning. I approved the preliminary report for the extension of the scheme to Balla and Kiltimagh and the preparation of contract drawings for an advance section of the scheme from Ballyheane to Balla which, I understand, includes Manulla, last November. The submission of the contract drawings by Mayo County Council is now awaited.
