Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Migration Trends.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

140 Mr. Sargent asked the Taoiseach his Department's estimate of the probable level of emigration for 2001, based on the trends of recent years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1011/01]

In the 12 months to April 2000 it is estimated that emigration was 22,300 compared with immigration of 42,300 giving a net inward migration of 20,000 persons. Estimates for the year to April 2001 will be published as soon as the preliminary results of the 2001 census become available in July 2001. Due to the volatility of the relevant flows, the Central Statistics Office does not compile advance estimates of migration.
