Question:

981 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the person or body responsible for sanctioning the temporary release from Castlerea prison of a person (details supplied); and the plans he has to ensure that the public are protected by his Department. [30442/00]

Paul Connaughton

Question:

1062 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress made to date in the investigation into the murder of a person (details supplied) in County Galway; when the Olden investigation will be completed; if the report will outline the person who gave the instructions to allow a convicted murderer out on day release; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1936/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 981 and 1062 together.

I refer the Deputies to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 370 of 12 December 2000 in relation to this matter.

I am informed that Mr. John Olden is continuing his review of the case but that he is not yet in a position to say when it will be finalised. As I have stated previously, the results of the review will be made available to the House and to Mrs. Nolan's family and I will give careful consideration to any recommendations which may emerge from the review. It would not be appropriate for me to comment any further pending the outcome of Mr. Olden's review.
