Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

983 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will reduce the height requirements for the Garda entrance exam. [30444/00]

I recently received the report of the Garda Síochána physical competence test review group and I am bringing proposals before the Government on the issues addressed by the report.

The terms of reference of the group were, inter alia, to advise on the principle of pre-entry physical competence tests which would be objective and not gender biased and, in this context, to assess the operational, scientific or other relevance of a height requirement as a selection criterion for entry to the Garda Sochána.
