Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Human Rights Commission.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

1060 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action he will take in relation to further appointments to the Human Rights Commission; if legislation is necessary; and when the first meeting of the commission will take place. [1934/01]

On 19 December 2000, the Government agreed to my proposals to enhance the range of interests to be represented on the Human Rights Commission through the creation of six additional positions on the commission. I would hope to be in a position to confirm the names of the additional commissioners to be appointed soon. The necessary legislative amendments to give effect to these developments will be contained in the proposed legislation to provide for the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights, which is due to be published in the current parliamentary session. In the meantime, pending the enactment of this amending legislation, it is my wish that the new commission would begin its work on an interim basis.
