Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Alan Shatter

Question:

1068 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of incidents of violent crime committed on the streets of the city and county of Dublin during the year 2000; the number of prosecutions instituted as a result of such incidents; the number of assaults and violent attacks that have taken place throughout the country during the year 2000; and the number of prosecutions which have as a consequence been brought. [2180/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics requested are not currently available. Statistics for the year 2000 are currently being compiled, and will be issued in due course.

Question No. 1069 answered with Question No. 1052.

Tony Gregory

Question:

1070 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda investigated the spate of arson attacks on cars at a location (details supplied) in early December 2000; if the owners of the cars were contacted; and if any progress has been made in the investigation. [2267/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on 15 December 2000, gardaí from Fitzgibbon Street Station attended at North Clarence Street where three cars parked in the flat complex had been damaged by fire.

I am also informed that all three owners of the vehicles were interviewed by the gardaí and that there was only one witness to the incident who could only provide a rather poor description of a male he had seen at the vehicles. I understand the scene was preserved for technical examination, and that inquiries are still under way.
