Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

1082 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the conditions for gardaí and members of the public of the Ballymun Garda Station; if he will give early sanction to the provision of a new station; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2511/01]

It is proposed to build a new Garda Station in Ballymun. Planning for the new station is being advanced through consultation with the Garda authorities and the Office of Public Works. Although it is not possible to say at this point when the project will commence, I can assure the Deputy that the matter will be progressed as quickly as overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other recourses allow.

Question:

1083 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in respect of the provision for gardaí to submit evidence to a court by certificate, he will identify the stations to which this applies; the reasons for the delay in extending this provision to all stations in the Dublin Metropolitan area; if he will take steps to extend the provision to all stations on the northside of Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2512/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, within the Dublin Metropolitan Area, the provisions of section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1997, are in operation in the following courts – the Garda stations covered by the courts in question are also listed: Bridewell Courts – Store Street, Bridewell, Pearse Street, Crumlin and Sundrive Road stations; Kilmainham Court – Kilmainham, Kevin Street, Ballyfermot, Lucan, Clondalkin, Rathcoole, Leixlip and Ronanstown stations; Tallaght Court – Tallaght and Rathfarnham stations; Bray/Dun Laoghaire Court – Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Kill-o-the-Grange, Cabinteely, Shankill, Bray, Greystones, Enniskerry, Blackrock, Dundrum and Stepaside stations; Swords Court – Coolock station and the Dublin Metropolitan Area Divisional Task Force (bail prisoners only). A total of 28 stations now utilise the provision in question. The question of extending the provision to all stations in the DMA is receiving consideration.
