Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Castle Saunderson.

Question:

1088 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his attention has been drawn to a proposal from the Joint Scouting Association of Ireland to develop a major facility on the Castle Saunderson estate in County Monaghan; if he will consider submitting a significant level of funding for this project; the number of contacts he has had with other Departments on this matter; the likely date when a decision will be made by the Government in respect of funding for this project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2091/01]

I met with representatives from Castle Saunderson, accompanied by the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, Deputy O'Hanlon, on 14 December last, at which the group presented its proposal to establish a permanent Jamboree campsite for the scouting movement in Ireland.

I explained to the group that the only scheme of sports funding administered directly by my Department for voluntary and community groups was the sports capital programme. The development of sporting and recreation facilities are the focus of this programme and the closing date for the receipt of applications under the 2001 programme is 9 February next.

I am aware that the group has made submissions to other Ministers regarding funding for the project. Following the November meeting, I wrote to my colleague, Deputy O'Dea, who, as Minister for Youth Affairs, would be in the best position to co-ordinate efforts to investigate possible sources of funding across different Departments for the project.
