Vol. 529 No. 1
158 Mr. Ring asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of jobs lost since 1 January 2001; and if she will give a breakdown of the locations nationwide. [1516/01]
In the period from 1 January 2001 to date, a total of 1,123 proposed redundancies were notified to my Department under the Redundancy Payment Acts, 1967 to 1991. A breakdown of the locations of these redundancies is provided in appendix I.
Job losses are due, in many cases, to the restructuring process which is ongoing in industry in Ireland, whereby activities at the lower end of the value added scale are being phased out as these activities become uneconomic in an Irish context. While job losses are regrettable, they must be seen in the context of overall strong economic growth, declining unemployment and sustained employment expansion throughout the economy.
