Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Literacy Levels.

John Bruton

Question:

1207 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the amount of the grant aid allocated to each county in relation to adult literacy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1795/01]

Adult literacy services are provided locally by the vocational education committees. The total amount of grant aid provided by my Department to the vocational education committees in 2000 for adult literacy was £7,307,321. The details are set out later.

In addition to grants to vocational education committees for the direct provision of the literacy services, expenditure on literacy covered grants to national organisations active in the area and a television series on literacy tuition. The total amount of such grants last year was £1,550,000.

My Department's total expenditure on adult literacy in 2000 was, therefore, £8.857 million.
