Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

1220 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals he has to meet problems being encountered by deaf children and adults (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1913/01]

I am committed to ensuring that all children, including those with hearing impairment, receive the support they require to enable them to participate fully in the education system. I am currently making arrangements for the establishment of an advisory committee on the education of the hearing impaired. This committee, which will be representative of the various interests involved in this area, will offer guidance to my Department on the future development of education services for the hearing impaired.

With regard to the specific case referred to by the Deputy, I am arranging for a member of my Department's inspectorate to investigate the child's needs. As soon as the inspector's report has been considered, my Department will communicate with the Deputy and the school authorities concerned.

Questions Nos. 1221 and 1222 answered with Question No. 1197.
