Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Denis Naughten

Question:

1241 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will extend the remedial service currently provided to a school (details supplied) in County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2002/01]

The learning-support guidelines published by my Department, recommend that the learning-support teacher – formerly referred to as the remedial teacher – provide supplementary teaching to approximately 30 pupils with low achievement and/or learning difficulties at any given time during the school year. Priority should be given to pupils who are performing at or below the tenth percentile in English and-or Mathematics.

The school referred to by the Deputy is one of a group of schools in the local area which have the services of a learning support teacher on a shared basis. Based on their total enrolment, the schools in question are considered to have an adequate learning support service.

Question No. 1242 answered with Question No. 1197.
