Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Community Employment Schemes.

Denis Naughten

Question:

163 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress to date in discussions taking place between her Department and the Department of Education and Science regarding the provision of caretaking and secretarial services through community employment schemes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1674/01]

My Department, in the context of the commitment under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness – PPF – and the Government's decision in 1999 to restructure community employment, is finalising discussions with the Department of Education and Science aimed at transferring community employment funding on schools schemes to that Department. The discussions with the Department of Education and Science relate to the transfer of funding equivalent to the amount spent on such schemes to that Department. The proposed transfer would provide an increase in funding for schools over and above the additional resources already allocated by the Department of Education and Science for schools support services over the past year and would provide a uniform and equitable system of funding for schools services which would, thereafter, be solely the responsibility of the Department of Education and Science.

As provided for in the PPF, consultations with the social partners will take place through the standing committee on the labour market. The precise nature of the scheme to be implemented is at an advanced stage of consideration.
