Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental E-mail System.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

1323 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of occasions on which viruses occurred in incoming e-mails in his Department in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2548/01]

Viruses regularly occur in in-coming e-mails in my Department as is the situation for all organisations receiving Internet e-mails. My Department has appropriate software and other security procedures in place to detect these viruses and to prevent them from getting through.

Viruses are deleted on detection as a matter of routine and it would not be possible to provide a count of the number which occurred within the past 12 months.

1324 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of occasions on which hackers have attempted to breach his Department's e-mail security in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2563/01]

My Department's e-mail security has not been breached through hacking at any time within the past 12 months. Secure fire-walling arrangements are in place to deter attempts at hacking and none have taken place within the past 12 months in so far as it is possible to ascertain.
