Question:

190 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason an application made by a person (details supplied) in County Cork for a fishing licence in 2000 was refused by the South Western Regional Fisheries Board in accordance with the conditions laid down under the Control of Fishing for Salmon Order, 1980; and the condition under which the person was refused. [1415/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 181 and 190 together.

Under the Fisheries Acts, the regional fisheries boards are statutorily responsible for issuing fishing licences. These boards issue the licences in accordance with the criteria laid down in the Control of Fishing for Salmon Orders, 1980 to 1997. I have been informed by the South Western Regional Fisheries Board that the person in question was not granted a licence in the year 2000 because he did not fall within any of the eligible categories provided for under section 4(2) of the Control of Fishing for Salmon Order, 1980. I enclose a copy of the relevant section of the order for the Deputy's information.

The board has advised that decisions on licence applications for 2001 have not yet been taken. Licence applications are assessed by the board at its February and March meetings and applicants are notified of the outcome of the decision making process after that.
