Vol. 529 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourist Attractions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

158 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the attractions for tourists to visit Dublin; the additional measures that can be put in place to make Dublin more attractive to visitors; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1476/01]

Overall responsibility for promoting Dublin as a tourist destination rests with Dublin Tourism. The most recent study of visitor attitudes to Dublin is the Dublin Visitor Survey, published this month by Dublin Institute of Technology and Dublin Tourism. It concludes, regarding the attractions for tourists to Dublin, that: the vast majority (94.8%) of visitors feel that the people of Dublin are friendly and hospitable; more than 85% of respondents believe Dublin city is safe and a similar proportion believe it is an easy city to get around; Dublin is generally perceived to have a good supply of visitor attractions and restaurants; some 83.6% of visitors agree that Dublin has a rich cultural life and 76.6% say that there are plenty of museums to visit.

On the negative side: almost one in four visitors state that Dublin is a dirty city; and nearly a third of respondents believe that prices in Dublin are too high, although 60% of visitors believe that Dublin still offers good value for money.

From this survey, it is clear that Dublin continues to exert a considerable attraction for overseas visitors. The challenge facing the tourism sector in Dublin is to manage its own success and, indeed, the impact of overall economic success on tourism. It is clear from this visitor survey that one of the most pressing measures required, to make Dublin an even more attractive visitor centre, is to break the vicious cycle of litter in the city. The Deputy will be well aware of my oft-repeated views in this regard.
