Vol. 529 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Richard Bruton

Question:

172 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the top-up maintenance grant available for low income students at third level; and the criteria which will apply in respect of its payment. [2617/01]

In September 2000, when setting up the action group on access to third level education, I announced the introduction of a special maintenance grant payable to disadvantaged grant holders. The adjacent and non-adjacent rates announced were £1,000 and £2,000 respectively.

I expect to receive in the near future the report of the action group and I understand that recommendations relating to the criteria for the special maintenance grant, and the rates to apply, will form part of that report. On its receipt, I will give full consideration to the report and its recommendations.
