Vol. 529 No. 2

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Service.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

126 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Health and Children when persons on the category II list for orthodontic treatment can expect to receive treatment having regard to the recent appointment of two consultant orthodontists at St. James's Hospital, Dublin 8; the plans he has to introduce tax relief for persons seeking private treatment; if such tax relief can be claimed retrospectively; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2669/01]

I have been advised that the South Western Area Health Board proposes to commence the assessment of category II patients next month in accordance with the guidelines for orthodontic treatment; however, it is likely that this may take some time to complete. Following assessment, eligible patients will be treated on a phased basis. In addition the appointment of a senior manager has been approved to co-ordinate and streamline the delivery of orthodontic services within the board.

Tax relief on the cost of private orthodontic treatment is already available and I understand that it may be claimed retrospectively.
