125 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number and proportion of higher executive officers in his Department who progressed to assistant principal in each year from 1988 to 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2848/01]

126 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number and proportion of administrative officers who progressed in his Department to assistant principal in each year from 1988 to 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2862/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 125 and 126 together.

Statistics of the numbers of higher executive officers promoted to assistant principal in each of the years 1988 to 1997, which have been compiled on the basis of available information, together with the number of higher executive officers serving in my Department in each of these years are set out in the following table.

The number of administrative officers serving in the Department at any particular time is typically no more than four or five. All those who served in the grade of administrative officer in the Department who had the required service for eligibility have been promoted to assistant principal.

Note 1: Staff serving in the former Departmental grade of social welfare officer are included in the figure furnished in respect of higher executive officer (HEO). Social welfare officers were absorbed into the general service grade of HEO under an agreement made in 1991.
Note 2: The figures for promotion do not include (a) persons from other Departments appointed to this Department to the grade of assistant principal, through interdepartmental competitions, or (b) persons promoted to assistant principal and assigned to other Departments.
