Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

168 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself regarding the adequacy of first and second level school places in Clane, County Kildare; if adequate provision exists to meet the needs of current and future populations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2881/01]

Primary school enrolments in Clane have shown a gradual increase in recent years. I am satisfied, however, that there is sufficient classroom accommodation in the existing schools to meet demand.

An application by the board of management of St. Patrick's boys' national school for ancillary accommodation is currently being examined in the planning section of my Department and a response will issue to the school as soon as possible.
With regard to post-primary provision, the position is that an extension to Scoil Mhuire Community School is currently at the final stages of construction and, when completed, will bring the enrolment capacity of the school to 850 pupils. Enrolment is currently at 740 pupils.
My Department will continue to monitor school accommodation requirements in Clane with a view to addressing any emerging additional need in a timely manner.

Question:

169 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the provision of extra facilities at Maynooth girls' primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2882/01]

Architectural planning for an extension to Maynooth girls' primary school is under way at present.

It is not possible at this point to say when construction will commence, however, the school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
