Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ivor Callely

Question:

20 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 278 of 11 October 2000, he will outline the progress the special planning group has made since its establishment in 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1168/01]

The planning group to which the Deputy refers was charged with making recommendations on the arrangements which should be put in place to ensure the most effective provision of a high quality co-ordinated service at all stages of education for students with disabilities.

The remit of the group extended to arrangements affecting provision at first and second level, including provision in special schools and in integrated settings.
The planning group presented its report in December 2000 and its recommendations are currently being considered in my Department in the context of the implementation of the Cromien report. I hope to make a further announcement on this matter in the near future.
The Deputy will be aware that my Department is examining a range of specific issues which have been raised in relation to the distinct educational needs of pupils of second level age in the special school system. I can assure the Deputy that my Department will make every effort to address these issues so as to ensure that the pupils in question receive a service which is appropriate to their age and needs.
