Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - Relationships and Sexuality Education Programme.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

43 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the progress to date of the introduction of the relationships and sexuality programme in schools; if he has satisfied himself with the general take-up and the development of the course; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2765/01]

April 2000 is the latest date for which figures are available regarding levels of implementation of relationships and sexuality education in primary and post-primary schools. The data were collected by questionnaire. Based on a 66% response rate from primary schools and 46% from post-primary schools, the data indicated that 40% of respondent primary schools were already implementing an RSE programme and 77% indicated an intention to teach RSE in some or all classes during the 2000/01 school year. The data also show that 81% of respondent post-primary schools are already implementing RSE in some or all classes and 84% indicated their intention to teach RSE in some or all classes during the 2000/01 school year.

Very good progress is being made with regard to the introduction of RSE. The figures quoted above represent a steady increase on the 1999 figures.
