104 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if asbestos was ever detected in the former College of Art building either prior to or during the demolition of the building; and if so, the level of fibre per millilitre and concentration of such asbestos. [2799/01]
A survey commissioned by consulting engineers in the Office of Public Works prior to the commencement of the demolition of the National College of Art and Design in connection with the recent Leinster House 2000 project revealed that there were small quantities of white asbestos (a) in insulation on a short length of heating pipe, (b) in a fume cupboard and (c) in the roofing material – 10% concentration – of an adjoining wooden building. These were removed and disposed of by suitably qualified contractors in accordance with the relevant European and national regulations.
The test of the airborne projects as in accordance with the UK health and safety guidelines for the determination of the level of fibres per millilitre of air. The official record of Enterprise Ireland who carried out the test confirms that the airborne fibres were below the levels specified in the regulations, that is, below 0.01 fibres per millilitre of air.
