Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Law Centres.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

213 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the proposal to establish a community law centre (details supplied) in Ballymun Dublin 11; and if he will give consideration to this proposal. [2936/01]

The provision of civil legal aid for the community is arranged by my Department by way of a grant-in-aid to the Legal Aid Board which is responsible for the 30 law centres around the country. My Department also provides a small grant-in-aid to free legal advice centres, FLAC. My Department does not provide funding for community law centres.

The Legal Aid Board has agreed to liaise with the group proposing the establishment of a community law centre in Ballymun. The board will also support the work of the community law centre within the scope and terms of the provisions of the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995, by taking appropriate cases referred to it by the community law centre.
