I propose to take Questions Nos. 127 and 128 together.
It is imperative that the current waste management planning process is brought to a satisfactory conclusion as soon possible so that progress can be made in the delivery of improved waste services and the integrated infrastructure which is necessary to meet modern waste management requirements. Any further delay in making sensible long-term provision for the waste management needs of the regions concerned is untenable. I have considered all the available options in order to bring the planning process to an early and satisfactory conclusion and I will make a statement on the matter at the appropriate time.
The proposed plans based on detailed strategic studies undertaken in the region concerned, and having regard to the overall policy approach of Changing our Ways, were developed in accordance with all the relevant provisions of the Waste Management Act, 1996, including public consultation. Accordingly, any legislative changes that might be introduced would not address the content of plans or specify any particular waste management infrastructure. The purpose would be to ensure the adoption, throughout the country, of regional waste management plans which adopt an integrated approach to waste management, respecting the widely accepted waste hierarchy.
