Vol. 530 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

135 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress on the review of the height requirement for applications to the Garda Síochána; the likely alterations to the current height requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1462/01]

I recently obtained the approval of the Government for the drafting of amendments to the Garda Siocháná (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, to provide, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána. I brought my proposals to Government following my consideration of the Report of the Garda Síochána Physical Competence Test Review Group, which I recently received. A copy of the review group's report has been placed in the Oireachtas Library.
