Vol. 530 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Alan Shatter

Question:

150 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda Síochána physical competence test review group has reached conclusions on the pre-entry physical competence tests for applicants wishing to join the Garda Síochána; and the plans he has to change the present height requirements. [27620/00]

I recently obtained the approval of the Government for the drafting of amendments to the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988 to provide for the introduction of a pre-entry physical competence test and for the abolition of the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána. I brought my proposals to Government following my consideration of the report of the Garda Síochána physical competence test review group, which I recently received.

The terms of reference of the group were, inter alia, to advise on the principle of pre-entry physical competence tests which would be objective and not gender biased and, in this context, to assess the operational, scientific or other relevance of a height requirement as a selection criterion for entry to the Garda Síochána. The report recommended, inter alia, that a job-related pre-admission physical competence test should be introduced for applicants wishing to join the Garda Síochána and set out the arguments that can be made, on the one hand, for maintaining or, on the other hand, abolishing the height requirement.

A copy of the review group's report has been placed in the Oireachtas Library.
