Vol. 530 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

40 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the investigation which is being held into allegations of bribery involving members of the Garda in Dublin, especially in regard to drink driving offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3176/01]

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that following the arrest of a garda for an alleged offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1906, as amended by the Ethics in Public Office Act, 1995, a criminal and disciplinary investigation was commenced. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the member involved is currently on suspension from the Garda Síochána. I am also informed by the Garda authorities that a number of other gardaí have been interviewed during the course of investigation with regard to their alleged involvement in the matter. The Deputy will appreciate that, as the matter is under investigation, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further.
