Vol. 530 No. 1

Written Answers. - Murder Statistics.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

66 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders reported to the Garda during 2000 and since the beginning of 2001; the number of cases in each category in which charges have been brought; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3198/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that 40 murders were recorded in 2000. Of this total, 33 have been detected and proceedings have commenced in 29 of these cases. I should add that these figures are provisional and are subject to change.

I am also informed that gardaí are investigating two murders that occurred during the current year up to 6 February. Of these, charges have been brought in one case and other charges may follow. I understand that the other case is under investigation.
