Question:

261 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the cost of establishing a mental health commission. [4775/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 259 to 261, inclusive, together.

The Mental Health Bill, 1999 currently before the Oireachtas, provides for the establishment of a mental health commission, independent mental health tribunals and an inspectorate of mental health services. The total cost of the mental health commission, the mental health tribunals and the inspectorate has been estimated at approximately £5.25 million, 6.6675 in a full year. The estimated full year cost for the provision of legal aid to all persons who are involuntarily admitted is £4.7 million, 5.967 million. The amount paid to the chairman of the commission and the salaries of the chief executive and other staff will be determined when the Bill has been enacted.
