Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

166 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on any progress in relation to the establishment of autistic specific education services in County Galway; if his Department's inspectorate have concluded and have made recommendations; if not, when a conclusion or recommendation can be expected; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5054/01]

My Department's inspectorate is engaged in ongoing contacts with parents of children with autism, school managements, health board officials and other service providers in the Galway area with a view to agreeing a suitable location for service delivery to the children in question. The focus is on securing a location which is acceptable to parents and will ensure the delivery of the full range of support services required by such children.

I understand that it is expected that the detailed planning of provision for an autism-specific service in the Galway area will be finalised shortly.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

[5055/01]

A total of 78 special classes dedicated to children with autism are now in place in the pri mary system. Further classes will be established in response to identified needs.

Question:

168 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if the money which the Government is allocating to providing services to children with autism due to the recent court hearings and subsequent publicity, has, in fact, been taken from day and programme services for people with learning disabilities. [5057/01]

I can assure the Deputy that the range of developments in provision which I recently announced in relation to children with autism are being supported by additional funding which I have secured for this purpose.

These developments do not have a negative impact on the funding available for other special education services.
