Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - Internet Access.

Denis Naughten

Question:

175 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of an article in a newspaper (details supplied) on 5 February 2001, he will state the steps he has taken to ensure that the use of his Department's e-mail and Internet facilities are properly regulated; if a policy on the use of these facilities exists; when the policy was last updated; when the policy was last circulated to staff; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5118/01]

An information notice was circulated to all staff in 1996 when web browsing and Internet e-mail were first introduced.

My Department is in the process of preparing a detailed computer and network usage policy document that clearly addresses the users' responsibility with regard to the use of the Department's IT facilities in general and e-mail in particular. A code of practice for browsing the Internet is signed by all staff who have such access.

I am satisfied that the combination of the code of practice and the computer and network usage policy will provide a clear statement of responsibility to staff with regard to their use of the Department's Internet related IT facilities.
