Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

40 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number and location of national monuments or other buildings of historical or cultural significance which are currently undergoing refurbishment or site investigation; if she can give an assurance that any development, improvement, refurbishment or other associated works will not in any way damage or otherwise affect the authenticity of the location, with particular reference to any works being carried out by State agencies or others acting on their behalf; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4910/01]

Question:

132 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of national monuments in respect of which restoration or remedial works are currently in hand; if in all such instances the works involved are complimentary to the integrity of the site, tomb or mound; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5172/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 132 together.

There is no list available of national monuments or other buildings of historical or cultural significance currently undergoing refurbishment or site investigations, but I have set out in the following table a list of the national monuments and historic properties at which it is proposed to undertake major works by my Department or on an agency basis during the course of 2001. I am satisfied that all of the work planned is necessary from either a conservation, protection or presentation point of view and that this work will be carried out in such a way as to protect the integrity and authenticity of the sites in question.

In addition to the sites on the following list my Department will also undertake minor conservation/improvement works at sites as the need arises over the course of the year. As this work will be very much on a need basis it is not possible for me predict the location or number of sites involved. In many cases, my Department would have the opportunity to comment on planning applications affecting heritage properties not in my direct care but it is impossible to give a categorical assurance that all works are carried out by others in such a way that they will not in any way damage or otherwise affect a site. I can, however, assure the Deputy that the legislative framework and systems for protecting the built heritage have been greatly improved since the Government took office.
