Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

Austin Currie

Question:

75 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Defence if it is necessary to be an Irish citizen to join the Defence Forces. [5076/01]

There are a number of circumstances under which persons may join the Permanent Defence Force and it is not always necessary to be an Irish citizen. To enlist in the Permanent Defence Force a person is not required to be an Irish citizen but is required to be ordinarily resident in Ireland for a period of five years. The Minister for Defence approves the appointment of officers and may, in certain circumstances, approve the appointment of persons who are not Irish citizens. The only specific circumstances where Irish citizenship is a requirement is in the case of an applicant for a cadetship which leads to commissioning as an officer.
