Vol. 531 No. 1

Written Answers. - Alcohol Treatment Centres.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

96 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason for the lack of spaces in alcohol treatment centres; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5059/01]

The provision of services for the management and treatment of alcohol disorders is a matter for the health boards. The report on the development of the psychiatric services, entitled "Planning for the Future", recommended that the emphasis on the management of alcohol dependency problems should be on community-based intervention. In line with this recommendation, health boards are developing comprehensive community-based addiction treatment services and are considering ways in which services provided by voluntary and/or private facilities might integrate with health boards' services.
