Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Year of the Volunteer.

Question:

68 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will take a day's leave to carry out voluntary work in recognition of this year as the International Year of the Volunteer; if he will allow all staff in his Department to take a day off on a similar basis; the steps he will take to pay tribute to the International Year of the Volunteer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The option of taking special leave without pay is available to staff in my Department for several purposes, one of which is to work with voluntary organisations engaged wholly or mainly on charitable work, community welfare or other voluntary initiatives. Any application made by staff in my Department for special leave to work on a voluntary basis with any recognised organisation for a day in recognition of this year as International Year of the Volunteer will be considered on its individual merits.

As regards my own contribution to voluntary work, I am glad to inform the Deputy that a considerable proportion of my time as a public representative is devoted to supporting the efforts of voluntary organisations. I add that work carried out by individuals on a voluntary basis for any worthy organisation is to be commended.
