Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Organ Retention.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

107 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will introduce legislative measures to deal with the issue of retention and use of organs in hospitals; if all documents held by his Department, required for the pending inquiry into organ retention, have now been located and made available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5963/01]

My Department is in the process of initiating a review of legislation relating to human tissue by an expert group under the chairmanship of Professor Denis Cusack. A request for documents relating to the terms of reference of the inquiry into all post mortem examination policy, practice and procedures in the State since 1970, was received from the inquiry solicitor by my Department earlier this week. These documents are being collated and will be forwarded to the inquiry as soon as possible.
