Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Question:

199 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí assigned to an area (details supplied); when CCTV will be provided to this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6178/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel to individual areas, that the manpower strength of all ranks of the area referred to as at 1 February 2001 is 76.

The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available, the needs of the area will be considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.

The Deputy may be aware that I announced last November that a total of £12 million has been allocated to the installation of CCTV systems – both Garda and local community – nationwide over the next three years with £4 million being allocated in 2001. An application for a Garda CCTV system in the area referred to by the Deputy is being considered in the context of this programme.
