Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Liam Aylward

Question:

207 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science the grants which are available to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny. [6080/01]

Under the terms of the higher education grants scheme, which is administered by the local authorities, and the vocational education committees' scholarship scheme, which is administered by the vocational education committees, grants are tenable in respect of full time undergraduate courses of not less than two years duration pursued in a university or third level institution which is maintained or assisted by recurrent grants from public funds in another EU member state, including the United Kingdom, with the exception of the following: (i) courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and teacher training courses including those leading to the award of Bachelor of Education; (ii) courses in colleges of further and higher education, other than courses which are at Higher National Diploma level or higher; (iii) courses provided in a college which are offered in private commercial third level colleges in the State, and which are validated by that college; (iv) courses in colleges akin to private commercial colleges in Ireland.

Accordingly, the student, to whom the Deputy refers, should contact Kilkenny County Council or County Kilkenny VEC in order to determine if the course which she wishes to pursue is approved for the purposes of the grant schemes and, if so, whether she is likely to fulfil the conditions for grant eligibility. In this regard, the main conditions relate to means, age, residency and nationality.
