Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Question:

95 Mr. Hayes asked the Taoiseach if his Department has received a request from the Reform Movement asking the Government to consider a change in domestic law to allow British citizenship to be extended to those in this jurisdiction who request it; if the Government is disposed to entering into discussions with this group in the context of the Good Friday Agreement, where people in Northern Ireland can choose either a British or an Irish citizenship; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7086/01]

There has been considerable, detailed correspondence between the Reform Movement and my Department on a range of issues, including that of British citizenship. However, this does not require a change in Irish law and does not arise under the Good Friday Agreement but is a matter for the British Government to consider. In the circumstances, it is not considered that further discussions with the group could advance this position.
