Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - ESB Privatisation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

109 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if, in the event of the privatisation of the Electricity Supply Board, it is proposed to retain ownership of Lough Derg and its foreshores and the eel fishery. [7196/01]

Fisheries and fishing rights within the waters of the River Shannon are vested, in accordance with the provisions of the Shannon Fisheries Act, 1935, in the ESB which has a general duty of management and conservation of the fisheries.

While the basis of the question is speculative, clearly the question of the future of the fisheries would fall to be addressed in any such context. This would be done in consultation with the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources.
