Austin Currie

Question:

188 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí servicing Clondalkin for each of the past five years; if he has satisfied himself that the Garda Síochána there has sufficient resources in personnel, vehicles and support services to properly do their job; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7158/01]

I am informed by the Garda, which is responsible for the detailed allocation of resources and personnel to individual areas, that the manpower strength (all ranks) at Clondalkin Garda station, as at 31 December for the years 1997 to 2000 and currently, is as follows:

Year

Strength

1997

56

1998

59

1999

62

2000

63

6/3/01

63

The figures show an increase in the strength at Clondalkin of 12.5% between 31 December 1997 and 6 March 2001. Eight vehicles are allocated to the Clondalkin district. This is comparable to other districts with similar size populations. Resources are augmented from within the division as required.
The Clondalkin area is also patrolled by the divisional task force, traffic and drug units, which have a current combined strength of 41, all ranks, seven of which are drawn from the Clondalkin strength.
The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available, the needs of Clondalkin will be considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
